Get started with AI Search

AI Search adds AI-powered search and chat to your website, automatically indexing your content via the Quant crawler. Once enabled, visitors can search your site using natural language and receive AI-generated answers based on your content.

Prerequisites

Before enabling AI Search, ensure you have:

  • An active Quant project
  • At least one domain configured in your project
  • Content deployed or a crawler configuration ready to run

Cost

AI Search is billed on usage. Page updates and AI answers are charged; searches are not. There is no included allowance. The dashboard shows the rates when you enable AI Search. Cost grows with how often you crawl or publish, so a frequent crawl of a large site costs more than a weekly one.

  1. Select your project in the dashboard
  2. Navigate to Search in the dashboard sidebar
  3. Click Enable AI Search

This creates a vector search index for your project automatically. The index is ready to receive content as soon as it is created. The project needs a domain (the preview domain works): it is the base URL that is crawled and linked.

How indexing works

The index is filled by any of these:

  • A crawler with AI Search Integration switched on. This is the usual way.
  • Content pushed to the project with the API or the quant CLI.
  • The AI Search API (POST /api/v3/organisations/{organisation}/projects/{project}/ai-search/pages), with a dashboard API token, for custom pipelines.

When you enable AI Search, the Quant crawler extracts content from your pages, generates vector embeddings, and stores them in a searchable index. Pages are indexed automatically when crawled.

The indexing process:

  1. The crawler visits each page on your site
  2. Page content is extracted and cleaned (navigation, footers, and boilerplate are removed)
  3. Content is split into chunks and converted into vector embeddings
  4. Embeddings are stored in your project’s search index

The dashboard provides a preview page where you can test both the chat widget and the search page before embedding them on your site. The preview supports both light and dark themes, allowing you to see how each component will appear to visitors.

To access the preview:

  1. Navigate to Search in the dashboard sidebar
  2. Select the Preview tab
  3. Toggle between light and dark themes to test appearance
  4. Enter a search query or ask a question to verify results

If you no longer need AI Search, you can disable it:

  1. Navigate to Search in the dashboard sidebar
  2. Click Disable
